We Adopted a Family for Christmas Giving

At Krav Maga we believe in giving back to the community, one family at a time. This is especially true during the holiday season, and we need your help.

Through the Compass Community Services program, a local non-profit organization that helps needy and homeless families, the studio has adopted a needy family to bringjoy and presents to at Christmastime.

For the remainder of shopping days until Christmas, we will be collecting items for the family, which includes a mom and dad, and a son and daughter. Specific shopping lists will be provided for each family member, and can be found posted at the studio or you can click here: www.kravmaga-sf.com/wishlist.html.

We are also requesting donations of canned foods and other non-perishables, baby diapers and wipes, laundry detergent, retail gift certificates, and clean linens, which can be used if still in good condition. These items will be given to the Compass Family Center to make a direct impact on the lives of the needy families seeking assistance, so be sure to stop by with your gift. Thanks for caring.

Calling All Kids

Who says Krav Maga is just for grown-ups? Thanks to the new Youth Training Program coming soon to the studio, young people in San Francisco can benefit from the fun, fitness and self-defense techniques you’ve already discovered.

Led by Barny, Peter and Michael, the level one class for kids’ ages 6 to 12 years will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4pm starting October 2. The 13-week program includes a t-shirt, belt-testing and yellow belt and certificate. Call the studio for pricing and registration.

Tell your friends with kids, bring your own, or borrow your niece or nephew and try it out. Class size is limited to 20 students, so register early.

Do A Good Thing Today

Now it is so easy to commit an act of kindness thanks to the convenient donation drop-off location at our studio. We recently partnered with Compass Community Services, a local non-profit organization that helps needy and homeless families regain their independence through support and skill-development services. During the fall, we will be collecting items to give to the Compass Family Center that make a direct impact on these families lives.

All you have to do is bring any of the following things with you the next time you come in for a work-out. Leave it up front when you sign-in.
  • Baby wipes
  • Disposable diapers and training pants for all ages and sizes
  • Canned goods, crackers, dried fruit and other foods with a long shelf life
  • Towels, sheets, blankets, comforters and curtains
The linens can be used, but must be laundered and in good condition. So do something nice and help a family who will really appreciate your effort. It doesn’t get any simpler than this.

Instructor Kathleeen Flinnery chosen for one month intensive training program

Yoga instructor Kathleen Flinnerty has been chosen to participate in advanced training by her yoga teacher. It is a one month live-in intensive program, and she will not be teaching here during that time. Her last class before she leaves will be Thursday, October 7th, and she will return to teaching on Thursday, November 4th. It is an honor to be picked for this exclusive program, only a few teachers have been selected to receive this instruction. We look forward to having Kathleen back, and benefitting from her experience as we have already.

Process versus goals

We are a very goal oriented culture. A premium is placed on results. Competition is touted as providing a level of tension that causes us to excel, but it can also be a source of stress and negative pressure. Our training can be affected in the same way for many of us. There is the pressure to get quick results, and the pressure brought on by comparing oneself to others who may be picking things up faster or simply have been in the system longer. There are other constraints such as jobs, children, and relationships that all require our attention, and these can also make progress in training a little slower than we might like sometimes.

For some of you this is your first exposure to physical activity of any sort. Even for students who have experience with strenuous physical activites or competitive sports in their backgrounds it can be hard to face the unique challenge of learning how to deal with issues of violence and personal safety. It is a lot for anyone to confront, absorb, and work on. The only way to make lasting changes is to integrate them slowly and comfortably. Take your time and make your Krav Maga self defense training a natural and sustainable addition to your life.

Most of the time, if we stop and reflect on it, much of our discontent comes from self imposed ideas of where we should be but are not yet, or what we should have but don't. Look around a class next time you come here, and you may spot a few people that are struggling with some things that now feel easy to you. They may be looking at you and thinking to themselves how they wish they could do a choke defense as well as you do. There will always be people who are ahead of us, challenging us, pushing us to the next level and providing an example for what we would like to become. Maybe you are one of those people to other students, and I'm sure you can think of someone who provides that challenge or example for you.

A great writer, I think it was E.B. White, once said he had a hard time writing every day, so in order to do it he just lowered his standards. I take it to mean that we will not be at the top of our game every day, and in order to practice our craft, whatever it is, we just need to practice. Some days will be good, some will be a struggle, and if we persevere some days will be inspired, the kind of days that help us break through sticking points and feel joy with what we are doing. Don't let self imposed pressure take away from the joy of training. Enjoy the process while you attain each of your goals.
