We have a busy summer planned at the SF Krav Maga Training Center. Here are a few of the things going on over the next couple months.

Green Belt Tune-Up and Test: Saturday July 24th, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and Sunday July 25th, 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Why do we have a tune-up?
We usually have a tune-up before every test, in the formof a thorough review of the material led by Head Instructor Barny Foland. However, for the Green Belt Test, there is too much material to allow for a complete review before the test. Doing both would take too long for one day, so we split this up into a tune-up day, and a test day.

Women's only self-defense series planned for this fall:
KMSF is preparing a course for women only. It will involve 8 hours of lessons delivered two different ways; one will be in two chunks of 4 hours on a weekend, the other will spread the curriculum over a series of weeks in 60 minute sessions. These classes are for women who wish to train specifically on areas of self defense that relate to attacks or threats to women. You will learn skills in rape prevention, victim profiling, and other factors that go into your personal safety that go beyond movements and combatives. Of course, this is Krav Maga, so you will definitely work on strong, aggressive strikes and kicks when attacked, when escaping, and from on the ground. Check the Newsletter in August for more details.

Here is some information from U.S. Department of Justice (Bureau of Justice Statistics) that is included in our material on women's self defense:

Americans have a greater chance of being a violent crime victim than of being injured in a motor vehicle accident.

More than 2.5 million women experience violence annually.

Women over 35 are most vulnerable to an assault in their own home.

VICTIMS' REPORT OF TIME OF RAPES AND SEXUAL ASSAULTS

6 pm-midnight: 43.4%
6 am-6 pm: 33.0%
Midnight-6 am: 23.6%

VICTIMS' REPORTS OF WHERE RAPES AND SEXUAL ASSAULT TOOK PLACE

At victim's home: 37.4%
At friend's, neighbor's or relative's home: 19.2%
On the street away from home: 10.0%
Parking lot/garage: 7.3%
All other locations: 26.1%

About half of rapes and sexual assaults are committed by friends or acquaintances. The FBI reports that half of all the women murdered in the United States die at the hands of husbands and lovers who have lost control.

Book Review: "The Gift of Fear"

As soon as I finished this book, I had to give it to my wife and daughter to read. If you are interested in personal safety, especially if you are female, you will get a lot out of it. Instructor Brian Lowry gave me a copy last month, and I couldn't put it down, and since then I've been recommending it to every woman I care about. I guess I'll have to buy more copies. I think men should read it too, not just for their own safety, but to also appreciate how different it is to live in this world as a woman does, to know what types of concerns exist for them as opposed to men. Author Gavin De Becker writes in a convincing and heartfelt manner about detecting potential violence, trusting one's instincts, and staying out of harm's way. It was very interesting to me to learn about what really are causes for concern for personal safety. There are a great deal of illuminating observations about how people ignore the signs of trouble, or are fooled or lulled into a position of risk by attackers. He follows everything with realistic advice about what to do if you find yourself in a predicament that makes you fearful.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

In August we will be changing our schedule and would like some input from all of our students.

We will be adding some Level 4 classes since we will have a level 3 test in July

We have had a few requests for:

1. Weekday AM classes 10AM?
2. Kundalini Yoga
3. Mui Thai
4. Boxing
What would you like?? and when??

You can fill out the student feedback on our web site or just reply to this email.

We need everyone to respond because if we do not have at least 10 people interested in a new class we can not add it.
