From Barny's desk
Being able to overcome a violent situation is first mental. Awareness is the first part of surviving an attack. Look around as you walk even if you are in a better neighborhood. If you see something or someone that just doesn't look right avoid the situation by crossing the street. Even if it is inconvenient at the moment, you could very wellavoid a violent encounter. If you cannot avoid the problem be mentally prepared to fight back with everything you have, and do not stop until you can get away safely.

Danger Zones and Attack/Defense Lines
In my work outside of martial arts, I am sometimes responsible for using imagery to communicate technical concepts, business processes, or complex systems. Periodically I have applied it to the study of martial arts, in my own notebooks or in trying to pass on information to my students. Here is a diagram I have adapted from one of my training journals, for illustrating concepts of movement and range in a self defense scenario. Please feel free to give me feedback on this. One of the fun challenges of doing this type of work is that it is ideally supposed to bring about consensus and wide understanding from as many constituents as possible. Or at least inspire debate, which is hopefully another means to achieve the same goal.
First of all, does it make sense? Is it missing anything terribly obvious? And then, what could improve it? It could be interesting to add things like which strikes and/or evasive movements can happen within each line of attack or defense, or what attacks can occur in each zone, or anything else you might think of to enhance clarity or add more information to the diagram. My aim with this was to make it easy to visualize, for myself, the directions I ought to be going while engaged in fighting.
I have more diagams and models in notebooks, and I will show more of them as your interest dictates. Others include depictions of how to fight from the wall, stick defenses and a variety of other techniques.
