Training while not training
Train in Krav Maga for a few minutes and you will no doubt encounter an instructor who relates something you are doing in class to an every day occurrence or movement that is familiar to all of us. Why is that? The first time a straight punch gets explained, it is often with the advice that it is just like reaching to grab something off a shelf. This example shows why Krav Maga is so easy to learn and absorb. There are so many ways to move, and so many situations we can train for, that it can be overwhelming to think about how we can ever progress to a level of skill that we desire. It can take a lot of time and effort to acquire a high level of skill in Krav Maga, as in anything. We all have busy lives, and it is difficult enough for some of us to carve out a few hours a week to devote to training outside of all of our other responsibilities.

One way to accelerate your progress is to come up with ways to use your training in situations you don't normally associate with it. It only takes a matter of minutes a day to reinforce movements you do in class. Observe yourself while you move through your own home, on your way to work, and as you navigate through your day. Where do you notice yourself performing movements that relate to what you do in class? No doubt, the more you observe, the more you will find that you can apply the movements and mechanics of self defense to all sorts of everyday activities. For example, when you get on or off the train, or out of your car, how do you do it? Do you heave yourself out of the car with your hands full of stuff, your mind already thinking about the pile of work that awaits you? Or do you collect your things, open the door after checking your immediate environment, and get out quickly and efficiently? When you walk down the city streets, how aware of your environment are you? Do you anticipate the flow of traffic and move before you need to, or do you find yourself sidestepping people when they are right on top of you?

In the class, there are a number of ways to extract even more out the training that you do. There are seemingly 'down' times in your participation in the class. Maybe it is when the instructor is explaining something you already familiar with. Maybe you are holding the pads for your partner to train on. Pad holding is definitely one area of training that lot of us might find a chore, or at best just a break for the holder. Honestly, this is one of the most useful skills one can work on. It is an ideal way to learn how to absorb impact safely, a critical skill in a street survival situation. Instructors here will spend a fair amount of time teaching students how to hold properly for their own safety. However, you can place even more of an emphasis on the fighting aspect of it and think of it as defending, not holding. You are not merely a prop for the other student, you are defending against their attacks. Observing the attacks as they come in and setting up your body to absorb the impact with balance and stability will increase your skills as a fighter. It also gives your training partner adequate resistance, strengthening their strikes while saving your joints from wear and tear.

Finding ways to mentally reinforce your Krav Maga studies, whether it is in a class, in your home, or on the street, will allow you to retain more of the material and apply it in more situations. The test of a good discipline is whether its application is broad or narrow. Try identifying just 3 things you do outside of class that can benefit from the movement and mechanics you learn in Krav Maga, and you will have begun training while you are not training.
