From Barny's desk

It is important to remember that belt testing and ranking is a personal achievement and reasonable goals should be set. Responding to an attack in a surprise situation should be the most important part of training. Everyone should remember to continue to train in the beginning level classes in order to become even more proficient and not have to think to remember any one defense. If you have to stop and think it will just make it harder to defend yourself. So if you are working in the higher levels and find yourself having to think about a choke or bear hug defense start taking a lower level class once a week. All the instructors at the school want to see everyone advance as fast as possible, but most of all we want to make sure everyone can be safe. Barny

Strike and Fight programs

Contact sparring can be both an intimidating and exhilarating experience. There are many positives to taking the plunge and going against other students who are trying to hit you back rather than focus mitts and airshields. You learn how to apply the instinctive movements and combatives that are learned in Krav Maga levels 1 -4 against a person who is not compliant or coaching you. It gives relevance to all the pointers that teachers give you about distance, timing, and posture that are not quite as apparent when working with non-resistant targets. While sparring , students have to deal with emotions such as stress, fear and anger even more than in regular Krav Maga classes.

To this end we have developed a new system of fight classes to enhance safety and progressively increase the range of intensity. There will be three levels: Intro to Strike and Fight, Strike and Fight, and Advanced Strike and Fight.

Intro to Strike and Fight is an 8-week course that will slowly acclimate beginning fighters to the special rigors of contact sparring. There will be contact throughout, but all sparring will be structured, for example a drill might involve working on inside defenses and counters only, or sparring with body punches only, or a single kick defense and counters. Less structured sparring will occur around week 4 and continue to progress until the end of 8 weeks. On completion, students will be prepared to enter other Strike and Fight classes. It starts Thursday, April 7th at 6:00 pm. Sign up at the front desk as participation is limited.

Strike and Fight class will be the same; practical fighting drills combined with free fighting in various flavors such as multiple attackers, structured ground fighting and a range of combatives and defenses.

Advanced Strike and Fight will take up the intensity level of the workout, plus the difficulty of scenarios. There will be sparring with open hand strikes, take downs, and ground fighting. Head gear will be required for this class along with the 14 oz. gloves, groin and shin protection and mouthpiece. This class will be strictly monitored and participation is contingent upon students exercising the appropriate level of self control.

In order to fully absorb the lessons learned in Krav Maga classes, students can expose themselves to these situations, learn how to overcome their fears and apply their knowledge in as real a way a possible. These three levels of contact fighting classes will allow students to acclimate themselves to contact training in a way that is progressive, manageable and safe. Whatever your level, we want to offer an environment where you can test yourself and your skills at the highest level you are capable of.
