Chinese Boxing Black Belt

Krav Maga Instructor since 1999

I’m certified San Quan Dao – Chinese Boxing Black Belt and Krav Maga San Francisco Head Instructor & Founder. In 1999 I was given the opportunity to train in Krav Maga and be certified as an instructor. I had been training in Chinese Boxing style for about 9 years and teaching for about a year. After my first day of Krav Maga training, I realized the difference between self defense and martial arts. Learning a system that works for everyone all the time, no matter how small the defender is and how big the attacker is, made me want to teach everyone.

I heard about Krav Maga in 2004, working with a few MMA fighters. I started training Cross Fit a year later and was instantly hooked, certified by Greg Glassman, the founder of Cross Fit. As a lifelong athlete, I started playing basketball at aged 5, alongside volleyball and swimming. I dabbled in martial arts after college and was really into yoga. Athletics are a big part of the fabric of my being & I love teaching people to be strong in their lives, take what they learn in a gym & apply it to everyday life.  I’m Cross Fit Level 2 certified and have credentials with 1000 Your Yoga Alliance, NASM Certified Personal Trainer , Krav Maga Fitness, TRX and USAW Sports Performance.

Krav Maga Instructor Since 2005

MA Experience:
– Kali & Ninjitsu

I started training in Krav Maga as a student in 2003 and started teaching as an Instructor in 2005. I received my Black Belt in 2009. My addition formal martial arts training includes but is not limited to: Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu, Shorin Ryu Karate, and Ninjitsu. I’ve studied these for various lengths of times of at least 2 years each with various levels of achievement. I became an Instructor because I really love the training philosophy and approach. It is also one of the toughest trainings to become an Instructor and I wanted that type of challenge. As an Instructor I want to give back to the students and challenge them to be better at Krav Maga, knowing they can handle themselves in a fight, be able to protect those around, and make the right decisions to get home alive.

I took an interest in Krav Maga when I learned about how Israelis trained for sports & fitness.  I’ve been training so many years that 50 pulls ups is a warm up and a good run is better than a bad stand. On a side note, no one should wear a white shirt at KMSF – it’ll be grey within 20 minutes.

I was introduced to Barny Foland at a networking event and learned the Krav Maga ropes, eventually becoming an instructor to grow and give back. Professionally, I also help people practice financial self defense.

I have been training Krav Maga for 10 years to supplement my previous training in Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai.  Being an instructor provides an opportunity to better understand the system and to provide community service to students and the public. When not practicing Krav Maga, I pursue learning new skills and reading about history and non-fiction.

I’m a licensed Massage Therapist, Certified TRX Instructor and Certified Ashtanga Yoga instructor. I credit my success with Krav Maga to my yoga practice where I believe it’s a necessary compliment to the rigorous demands of a fighting system like Krav Maga. Astanga Yoga is a vigorous and athletic style of yoga, intended to realign the spine, detoxify the body and building strength, flexibility and stamina. I’ve completed 200 hours of ‘Its YOGA,’ an intense 2 week Yoga immersion at Miami Life Center. I’m currently undergoing another 200 hours at Mindful Body SF.  I love Yoga as it has a positive impact on my life and I can help others improve health and well being.

While I had been actively looking at a martial art to get involved in, I first heard of Krav Maga from the Discovery Channel series ‘Human Weapon.’  More than any of the martial arts they covered, they described Krav Maga as intense!  Riding the MUNI 1BX down Bush Street, I passed by the Krav Maga studio daily and finally gave it a try. I was hooked. As an active triathlete, Krav Maga resonated with me, combining a great work out and education.  I’ve been training for 8 years and recently passed the Level 3 Instructor Series Phase C.

Krav Maga literally found me as I was desperately in need in gaining the skills of self defense, over 10 years ago. My feet did the walking and transported me to KMSF. I started training in 2004 and now as a Level 5 student, I took a sabbatical mid stream, living in Guatemala. I’ve been a full time student since and the past few years, an instructor.

Shotokan Karate Black Belt

I first heard about Krav Maga in late 2006 from a friend/co-worker who was former military and had just opened a school. My martial arts background totals over 13 years. As an adolescent, I practiced a Shotokan-based style of Karate for 5 years, where I received my black belt. As an adult, I have trained in Krav Maga for over 8 years, including over 4 years as an instructor, and I am currently certified as an Expert 2 Level Brown Belt. I became an instructor because I truly believe in the principles of Krav Maga. It is a brutally effective self-defense system that continually adapts to its surroundings, making it highly effective for anyone. I take great joy and pride with passing this type of knowledge and skill along to people, which can help someone stay out of harm’s way.

I first heard about Krav Maga when I moved from New York to San Francisco in 2010. I was looking for a place to train martial arts and I found KMSF.  I came to see a class and signed up the same day.  I’ve been training Krav Maga for five years and became an instructor, purely because I enjoy teaching and coaching students.

I first heard of Krav Maga while watching Fight Quest. As I was looking for a self defense program that I could use in everyday life, I found KMSF to be life changing, being able to apply what I was reading in the police blotter. Previously I’d trained in boxing yet learned most of what I know from simple street fighting. Training at Krav Maga for 5 years, I then became an instructor to help others achieve what I’ve learned and gain total confidence.

I have been training in Krav Maga for about four years.  I became an instructor because 1) personal safety awareness and physical self defense are skills that I believe everyone should possess and 2) I enjoy teaching and seeing that increase in awareness, physical ability, and confidence in students.

Chikara Karate Blue Belt

I heard about Krav Maga on the TV show ‘Human Weapon’ shortly after I moved to San Francisco in 2007. I had been looking for a different training regimen and Krav looked like something I would really enjoy. After looking online, I found KMSF and never looked back. I’ve been training Krav Maga for the past 7+ years and currently passed my Green Belt. I’m now testing for my Blue Belt. I also trained in Chikara Karate when I was younger and reached a rank of Blue Belt. After training in Krav Maga and realizing how much I enjoyed it, I decided to become an instructor and attained that rank in July of 2014.

Krav Maga (pronounced 'Krahv MaGAH'') means 'Contact Combat' in Hebrew. It is the official self-defense and fighting system used by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), Israeli Police and Security Services, and is the preferred training system for more than 350 U.S. law-enforcement agencies. This unique training method has been recognized as the most efficient self-defense system for real-life situations, emphasizing practical defenses against real violent attacks.

Krav Maga San Francisco was established in 1999, originally running classes in a small 750 square foot facility in the Marina district of San Francisco.

In 2003 KMSF relocated to a 6,000 square foot training facility (its present location on Bush Street). With continued success, in 2008, KMSF took over the lower level 6,000sq.ft. On Bush street and nearly doubled the size of its 3 training rooms, added a weight room and a CrossFit room!

Today, Krav Maga San Francisco holds its over 60 classes per week in a 2-floor 12,000 square foot state-of-the-art training facility and is the preferred training center for over 600 members!
